Ceramic vs. Porcelain Bathroom Tiles

Porcelain bathroom tiles can create a beautiful and long-lasting style for your bathroom walls or floors.

As you decide how to design your bathroom, you will want to consider what bathroom tiles you prefer. Porcelain and ceramic are often used interchangeably when referring to bathroom tiles because they are both part of a larger category of “ceramics.” However, tile professionals know that ceramic and porcelain bathroom tiles are different. They bring unique advantages to your bathroom design, with official porcelain tiles being denser and less vulnerable to water infiltration. If you want to learn more about what makes these tiles unique, consider how they compare in appearance, water resistance, care, and durability.

The Appearance of Ceramic vs. Porcelain Bathroom Tiles

Ceramic and porcelain are both frequently manufactured with a glazed surface coating, and they may even be indistinguishable at a glance. However, porcelain bathroom tiles can often be manufactured to resemble different materials, such as marble or wood grain. Ceramic tile is available in mostly solid colors, and you may find simulations of wood grains or natural stone. Overall, porcelain tiles have a slight edge when it comes to appearance because they are more readily available in various colors, patterns, and surface finishes.

Water Resistance

Porcelain is dense and more impervious to water, making it an appealing choice for bathrooms where water may splash on the floors and walls. Ceramic is somewhat more susceptible to moisture infiltration, although the difference is minimal if the ceramic tile is glazed. However, the tile’s unglazed portions of the back or side will not resist water.

Care and Cleaning

Fortunately, both ceramic and porcelain tiles have the same needs for care and cleaning. To maintain the cleanliness of these tiles, you simply use a damp mop with a mild water-soap solution. The grout between tiles must be periodically sealed to guard against mildew and stains.

The Durability of Bathroom Tiles

Because porcelain bathroom tiles are denser and less porous than ceramic, the tile is harder and more impervious to moisture. Due to its body composition, it is overall more durable and suited for frequent usage. The color continues all the way through the tile, so if you chip a tile, the damage is nearly invisible.

If you chip a ceramic tile, you will see a different color underneath the top glaze, which makes chips stand out more. The clays used for ceramic tiles are also less dense than porcelain clays, so they are somewhat more prone to breaking and cracking. However, both bathroom tiles can last quite a long time if they are well-maintained.
