How to Plan For Your New Home Kitchen Remodel

Here’s how to effectively plan for a satisfying home kitchen remodel.

When homeowners decide to remodel a part of their house, they often choose the kitchen first. Why is this? The kitchen is the heart of any home, where family and friends gather to eat, socialize, and do any number of other activities. If your kitchen isn’t large enough for your family or has outdated appliances and uncomfortable seating, you can design a space that works for you with the remodeling team at About Kitchens & More. How can you start the process of a new home kitchen remodel? There are several steps you should consider before starting construction.

First, Create Your Budget

The first step in the remodeling process is to create a budget. This will help you navigate the rest of the process and guide your decision-making. Be sure to include a cushion to account for unexpected costs that may crop up during the remodeling process.

Consulting with the design experts at About Kitchens can help you determine what materials and appliances are suitable for your budget and which renovations are possible.

Evaluate What’s Important

It can be tempting to fill your new kitchen with all the new features you can imagine. However, consider what you want and need for your kitchen. Will you really use that wine fridge? Do you need two sinks or just one? Investing in quality pieces that you know you will use daily is smarter. Make a list to separate what you must have and what potential things would be nice. If they fit into your budget, you can add them in.

Choose Kitchen Counters

When planning your home kitchen remodel, you want to consider the significant sections of your kitchen. This includes the countertops. Make sure you have at least 36 inches of counter space for food prep, 24 inches on one side of your sink and 18 inches on the other. If you can create more counter space, do so.

Appliance Placement

Remember that you need space in front of your appliances to use them efficiently. The minimum distance is about 30 to 48 inches. Make sure a nearby wall will not inhibit your fridge door. You want to make sure that you can open all appliance doors completely.

Spacious Kitchen Walkways

Don’t forget the importance of walking space when considering your new home kitchen remodel. Walkways in your kitchen need to include at least 42 inches of space between counters and a kitchen island. If you have less space than this, people will knock into each other or bump into countertop corners.

During your home kitchen remodel, stay involved and feel free to ask your contractor any questions that come up. Your ideal contractor should be open with you and inform you of all updates during the process. This ensures that you create the best new kitchen for your family.
